And that, friends, is why we revise.

So I’m going through my manuscript, twenty or so pages every day, and hey – guess what? I have a basketball season ending in December.

Um.

Basketball does not end in December. As you probably know. As everyone in the world probably knows.

*Sigh*

Could I change the sport? Sure, if I wanted to redo the ENTIRE storyline. Could I change the timing? Sure, I could do that. If I wanted to lose the Best Christmas Gift Mixup Ever.

*Sigh*, redux.

It’s a bummer, I’m not going to lie to you. But it’s fixable. As it always is.

Just thought you might want to revel in the glories of the writing world for a few minutes.

It’s like that stage where your wip has just grown up so fast and is now turned into a goth black lipstick tatooed teenager and you wish you could go back to those exciting ‘baby days’ but have to settle for scrubbing them clean and enrolling them in college…sorry. DeNae - Ugh. I keep losing my characters’ cars. “Where’d she park?” “Why does he need a ride?” “Wait, didn’t her husband pick her up? What happened to her Mercedes?”

I’m thinking of drawing a little map and putting those uber tiny toy cars on it, and every time someone goes somewhere, I’ll move their car! So pitiable, really.October 6, 2010 – 12:58 pm

Jessica Johnson - Oh I know exactly what you’re talking about! In one of my manuscripts the main character’s love interest is a basketball player. I had to do all this research about which positions do what, when basketball season starts and ends, and how their jersey numbers are picked. Whew! Luckily I have a basketball jock for a brother, so whatever I couldn’t find online I just bugged him about. :)
Don’t you just love revisions? I have mixed feelings… it’s great to see how wonderful our work can be, but at the same time it’s feels like pulling teeth. Impacted ones. Lodged into the jaw bone. And don’t get me started on the dry sockets!
